Blog: December 30, 2012

Hello! I hope every one enjoyed the Christmas holidays and is ready to welcome in the New year. We are having a beautiful sun shiney day her in Remington Virginia.

It has been a while since my last blog post and I am sorry about that, I just took on a little more work than I was able to do.  My Etsy Shop along with some other work that I need to do was to much for me and I just couldn't write my blog, I apologize and I hope you forgive me.

When I posted my last blog I was working on my Etsy's shop and telling you about my Santa Figurines that were for sale. Well, in that post I had 6 Santa's for sale.  I sold 4 of them, and I am also offering a PDF file with 9 pages of directions with pictures where you can create your own Santa Figurines all for $10.00, the directions are emailed to you. I have a few Vintage items left and I have included my Etsy shop URL here for if you would like to browse in my shop.

I have been so involved with working in my Etsy shop that I have not had time to do any painting and I need to add new art work to both Etsy and my dessie-h-durham-.fineartamerica.com website.

I saw this post on Facebook where Leslie Saeta who is starting a 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge on January 2nd and those of us that have joined will be able to post our paintings on her post. ( And it is Free) WOW, that will be so much fun, and I encourage you to follow me along while I create new art work... Doing one painting a day may be rough but I need you to follow me because I need someone to give me a little push and a little encouragement

Leslie, who an award winning artist who paints fresh and colorful paintings using only a palette knife. She paints in her studio full time and has over 30 years of marketing experience. She is devoted to helping other artists sell their art, especially on-line. Ozarkian Santa Carrie's Toys, Wreath, Cane and Wears a Red Hat

Ozarkian Santa Carrie's Toys, Wreath, Cane and Wears a Red Hat

August 06, 2012

Hello! Today here in Virginia we are getting some much needed rain, the temperature has dropped and now the cool air feels so good.

Don't you think that the time seems to pass us by so quickly? Here summer vacation is over, school started this week and August brings thoughts of fall.

Don't you think with all of the hustle and bustle of getting every thing that we must accomplish each day the Holidays sneak up on us before we know what has happened?

I know many people take advantage of special sales to do their Holiday shopping, I know I do. Shopping online saves me so much time and it has become so convenient for me that except for some very special items it is the best way to go.

There are some things that you can only buy from special suppliers…Say for instance, for any one who takes the time to drink in their surroundings, knows how much the little things matter.

A a fragrance that you love, your favorite place on the couch, a picture of the kids on the book shelf that you stop to melt over and when you’re dusting or lighting the candles or watching TV.

But little things do matter! Something that you may think of as a luxury would be a beautiful piece of art that would last a life time and would bring much pleasure to you or for a gift for some one that you love.

Several years ago I made a line of figurine Santa Claus's and I sold them on line, (if you put my name in Google you may still fine places where I sold the Santa's figurines.)

I did have 6 Santa figurines left but one sold and now I have 5 and they are now for sale here on Etsy...Yes little things do matter!

This is an Ozarkian Villager Santa, he carries toys in a bag, he holds a green wreath and wears a Red Hat
Gloves are Black
His Gown is Yellow Ocher and wears a deep Red Coat with white fur trim.
He has been finished wit a deep coat of Burnt Umber to give him and antiqued finish.
From tip of hat to his bottom he measures 13 inches
From side to side across bottom he measures 8 inches
He has an information tag hanging from the green wreath.
My signature is on his bottom and he was made in 1993.

His name is Villager

He has been sculpted from Celuclay and is very strong and sturdy.
He has been painted with the best acrylic paint that I can buy.

To dust him just use a soft cloth, BUT PLEASE do not wash him with water if you take care of him he will last forever.

I don't' think of my Santa figurines as being toys, he will always increase in value

Summer Time Watermelon and Kiwi

July 9, 2012

Hello! I hope you are doing well today.
The temperature here in Virginia has dropped in to the 80’s, and has some chance of it raining and we do need the rain, it is a little gloomy out side, makes me want to sleep, but I’ve got work to do.

If you remember there was a time when we couldn’t always buy a watermelon at our supper market, but now regardless of what time of the year it is now we can now buy a watermelon, I would almost bet that you have one your refrigerator now.

So I think this is a good time to publish an image of our watermelon that I painted last summer.  I always take a photo of my subject and then we can eat the evidence which is always fun.

I hope you enjoy my art work and you can always purchase my art prints here on line:
dessie-h-durham-.artistwebsites.com  It is time to start thinking about Christmas shopping in July.

Please visit my Etsy shop:  www.etsy.com/shop/DessieFullTimeArtist where I also sell my art prints, it's July and time for July Christmas shopping.

Weathering the Storms

Weathering the Storms!

Hello!  I hope your day is going well. This is a beautiful 4th of July day here in Virginia,
but very hot with a huge amount of high humidity.

I guess heat and humidity are not the only things that we have to complain about here on the East Coast, so many people are still suffering from the lack of power and the damage from the storms.

Do you believe that there is a more constructive way for people to protect them selves from the destructive elements of the weather? What do you think? Please comment.

I am one of the more fortunate ones because our home was built in a neighbor hood of homes where the electric wires were buried under the ground. Sure we lost trees and there was damage to some of the homes, but we had electric power.

Sure, it takes lots of money to bury the electric wires under the ground, but most builders are now doing this as they build new homes…

The cost of repairing the damage will never stop because the storms will continue forever and ever, and it will happen again and again and the misery of the people will continue on and on!

There must be some one with enough smart pills to figure out how to come up with enough money to protect us from the loss of our power.  What do you think, where are they?

Sure, we the people are already paying enough taxes, but it seems to me that a small tax  would act as an insurance policy to get who ever is in charge of burying the electric lines under grown and to act on something like this.

PLEASE COMMENT: tell me what you think; this will be shared by every one that reads my blog.

I thought the snow on this Christmas card might make you smile.

I will see you again soon.

Cool Lemonade

Hello!  Well, like in most places the temperature is hot today here in Virginia.

My daughter enjoys selecting the fruit that I paint from the produce section of our grocery store, she not only selects the best looking ones, but we get to eat the fruit too.

And if you look you can see the juice running down from the cut lemons in this painting, doesn't it make your mouth water just to think about drinking a cold glass of lemonade made from these lemons.

So how about kicking your shoes off and relaxing for a while with me while you go to my Etsy shop; www.etsy.com/shop/DessieFullTimeArtist to browse.

You may also purchase my art prints here:

Kitty Cat Playing in a Red Bucket

 June 23, 2012
Hello! I hope you are doing well today; our weather here in Virginia was just a tad bit cooler today, we had a little wind last night, it blew a few things over.  After the tornado that we had recently I took some supplies into the bath room, candle, matches, flash light, one never knows when the flashlight batteries won’t work. I had never thought about leaving telephone numbers in the bathroom before, I do now!

This is a panting of my daughters kitty cat that I did several years ago when she was playing in her sand box. I hope you enjoy it.

The print of this painting can be purchased here and it comes in several sizes, my prints can be mated, framed or printed on a stretched canvas with either black or mirrored side and are ready to hang  There is also a good selection of frames to choose from..  There is a 30 day guarantee on my art work.

Abstract Whispering Winds

 June 15, 2012
Hello! It is a beautiful day here in Virginia and I hope your life is moving along smoothly…

This is one of those days when there are so many issues to resolve that I don’t know which one is most important.

So I thought today I would show you something that I did in an abstract piece of art. I get the feeling that the wind is blowing in this one, (we just experienced a tornado a few days ago, and the wind did blow hard) but even so I think this abstract painting  has a lot of energy and speaks to me in a beautiful way.

I Hope you enjoy this painting of Abstract Whispering Winds.

Ruby Throat-ed Humming Bird

May 10, 2012

Hello, I hope you are doing well today.

A few days ago we had a small tornado. My daughter and I were looking out through the back door glass window.  It was early evening and the wind was really blowing, the rain was sweeping across the ground in heavy sheets of water.

We had not heard any tornado warnings, so she went back up stairs, and in the upstairs of our house you can really hear the noise of what is happening out side. The cats were running to find a secure place to hide.

I walked back in my living room and looked out of the window and things were flying across the yard.  I yelled tornado and she was right behind me and said I’m right here.  We ran into the bathroom and waited a few minutes, and then we ventured out.

Well, we were pretty shook up. It dipped down into our back yard; it first took our garbage can, some shingles from the roof, damaged our out door shed out back and took some trees out of our back yard.  My next door neighbor’s house took more damage and it blew a few trees down in four other yards.

So this brings me to my humming birds.
The humming feeders are on our back deck so, after dinner we sit out on our  deck and watch the humming birds feed.

There is a small forest behind our house and she turned it into a sanctuary for the birds and small animals. Sadly the tree next to our house was taken down,  and it had some bare limbs that the humming birds roosted on.

But now the humming birds have found a different tree and now every thing is well and good, we just can’t see them until they come up to feed.  We were lucky that we were so blessed and that the damage was not worse, I have to thank God for that favor.

This painting is 6 X 8 inches.
I hope you enjoy viewing my art work, it can be purchased here:

Cut Lemons and Lemonade

May 30, 2012--Today I’m going to talk about lemons and my paintings.

Hello!  I do hope everything is going well for you today.

I’m a little depressed, my great granddaughter’s right hand was injured in a freak accident, and several bones were broken.  She is a dental hygienist and I can’t imagine how this is going to effect how she makes her living, but on to better things…

To day I’m going to talk about lemons. Just to mention the word lemons brings saliva into my mouth, how about you..? Lemons are used in so many ways, for recipes, clean your kitchens sink, and whiten your teeth, make lemonade and the list goes on…

The following information is by Crystal Ray and it will help you learn how to store and use fresh lemons, and once you find out how easy it is, you'll never again buy a plastic lemon or those bottles of reconstituted lemon juice that have very little nutritional value.

Purple Egg Plant

May 24, 2012

Do you like Fried Eggplant? I love them, I hope you enjoy my painting…Here is one of our Eggplants from last summer.

Hello!  I hope you are well today; it is raining today here in Virginia just the right amount to make our gardens grow…

Debra has a five by six foot raised garden where she grows some really nice vegetables and it has a ring of strawberries around the inside edge, over on one end she grows herbs.

Around by my kitchen door I grow cilantro, dill and a tomato plant, it is great fun picking cilantro even when there is snow on the grown, In April the cilantro starts blooming and the seeds will fall to the ground and will soon sprout and start growing new plants again.

On the other side of my kitchen door a huge concord purple grape vine grows and this summer we have delicious concord grapes to eat.

In among the grape vines are some Polk plants have been growing and I love to cut the tops off of the plants and cook them in some fresh spinach. The Polk
plants have beautiful deep purple berries that the birds love to eat. Talk about free food!  Haa! Haa!

In the depression days, food was hard to come by.  There were Polk plants scattered over the fields and people would cut the tops from the plants and take a loaded wagon full of Polk to the canning factory.  I was sixteen when I work there.  But that is a whole different story about those days!

Elvis Presley sang about Polk Salad Annie

Block Stones in Perspective

Hello, I hope this finds you well today.

I sometimes step out side of the box when I paint. So this time when I started to paint I decided that I wanted to try something different than the usual things that I paint like flowers, vegetables, fruit etc.,.  Although I did not use perspective in painting this Block Stones image I will later add a link on how to draw a brick wall in perspective.

This is my painting of Block Stones, I hope you like the painting.

Liquid Lunch Oil Painting

Hello, it is good to see you again. I’m glad to have you visit me and share this beautiful glass of liquid lunch with me.

A while back I was bored and was trying to think of some thing that I wanted to paint.

But instead of painting I decided to take my crystal glasses from the cabinet and clean them, then when I see the light hitting the crystal after it has been cleaned I really think it is beautiful. So this was when I decided that I should fill the glass with a drink and use it for a painting.

I’m glad to have you visit me and share this beautiful glass of liquid lunch with me.

Pink Grapefruit: What Color are Shadows

Pink Grapefruit: What Color are Shadows

Hello!  I guess everyone has days when nothing goes right; today I‘m having one of those days, painting shadows are something that just tears me up.
I have been frustrated with trying to paint shadows in this pink grapefruit and I’m never sure about how they bend when they are reflected on a wall and if the values are right.

If you are having problems with painting shadows or want to know more about how to paint shadows here is a link that may help you, the “Old Masters” knows best!    http://painting.about.com/od/colourtheory/a/shadows_Impress.htm

Hot, Hot Red Peppers

Hello!  Honestly, April 28 was a chilly day here in Virginia. Chilly enough to have chilly for dinner and use up some of those hot, hot red peppers that we grew in our garden last summer.
